Taproom & Production Area Retrofit for New Craft Brewery Location

Black Bear was the contractor of choice to provide coatings and renovations needed to meet and exceed compliance standards and strict health codes.

Project Overview
Idle Hands was retrofitting an older building to house their brewery and taproom and Black Bear was brought in to facilitate work in both customer and production spaces. Each section had a unique set of specifications to provide optimum safety and durability, as well as complement the look and feel of the space. Having completed multiple projects for local breweries and restaurants, Black Bear was the contractor of choice to provide coatings and renovations needed to meet and exceed compliance standards and strict health codes.
The Process
  • STEP 1
    Removal of glues & mastics of existing floors
  • STEP 2
    Refinished existing slab and brought it up to polish
  • STEP 3
    1/4 inch urethane cement with urethane topcoat
  • STEP 4
    2 inch Cant Cove on CMU block walls
  • STEP 5
    4 inch Cant Cove on all other sides

Challenges
The age of the building was a major factor in completing the renovation. A significant amount of trenching was needed to pitch the drains and bring the space up to code. Plus, the client’s previous go-around with epoxy coatings had left them weary of the suggested solution and was skeptical of the outcome when discussing options.

Black Bear’s Solution

Due to imperfections in existing concrete, Black Bear applied a non-shrink urethane mortar to properly pitch the drains and compensate for negative drainage. Black Bear also spent time educating the client on the benefits of epoxy and reassured them that the proposed solutions would maximize their return on investment. The result was a more durable commercial floor, and a highly aesthetic polished look in customer areas.
