Project Overview
When Boston Harley-Davidson set out to open a new dealership in Revere, Massachusetts, the goal was to create an environment that reflected the brand’s bold, edgy identity, while still being highly functional. The owners wanted floors and countertops that were unconventional, stylish, and durable enough to withstand high foot traffic and heavy motorcycles. Black Bear Concrete was selected to engineer and install a flooring system that offered both industrial performance and a sleek, modern aesthetic. In addition, matching countertops and water-resistant surfaces were needed throughout a facility over 37,500 square feet.
The Process
  • Diamond Refinement
Adjusted tooling (switched diamonds) to achieve the desired PSI and final appearance.
  • Slab Demolition
Removed ¼ inch of surface concrete in areas slated for overlay.
  • Joint Cutting
Used diamond blades to cut clean joints at section edges for a seamless look.
  • Countertop Finishing
Polished with 50-grit metal bond, followed by 100, 200, and 400-grit resin-bond diamonds for smooth, stylish surfaces.
  • Brand Integration
Pressed concrete mix over a brass nameplate for a custom branded detail.
  • Service Area Floors
Installed multicomponent epoxy system with a vapor reduction sealer to address moisture concerns and ensure durability.

Challenges
The project presented key challenges, including an aging floor, moisture risks, and tight timelines that demanded precise solutions. Aging Infrastructure: The building had undergone decades of surface repairs. The existing concrete showed signs of damage, including trenches, residual mastic, and gypcrete underlayments. Surface Inconsistency: A 3,000 sqft section of the slab was unsalvageable and required an alternative overlay solution. Moisture Risk: An evaluation revealed the building was vulnerable to moisture intrusion, putting the showroom floors, customer safety, and long-term operations at risk. To protect the space and prevent costly repairs, a vapor-control strategy was essential. Time Restrictions: The work had to be completed during off-hours (9PM–6AM) within a 5-week window to avoid disrupting the dealership’s buildout schedule.

Black Bear’s Solution

Black Bear engineered a modern concrete system that embraced the industrial character of the brand while addressing structural inconsistencies in the existing slab. A high-performance epoxy flooring system with vapor mitigation was installed in service areas. For the showroom, Black Bear produced a gray polished concrete finish with visible aggregate and colorant to match the Harley-Davidson aesthetic. Countertops were poured in place using Buddy Rhodes Counter Mix, with a polished finish that tied into the overall design.
