Long-term Project for Hospital Campus Results in Long-term Performance

With experience engineering and installing new commercial coatings systems for the healthcare industry, their GC knew that Black Bear was uniquely qualified for the job.

Project Overview
UMass Memorial Health System embarked on a long-term renovation and new construction endeavor. With experience engineering and installing new commercial coatings systems for the healthcare industry, their GC knew that Black Bear was uniquely qualified for the job. UMass Memorial required renovation of lavatories to improve long-term performance and minimize the need for repair. In addition, they had aesthetic requirements to enhance the environment and coordinate with existing corridors and neighboring spaces.
The Process
  • STEP 1
    Bathroom renovation
  • STEP 2
    Scheduled shutdown of hospital wing
  • STEP 3
Lay DuraFlex coatings over existing tile
  • STEP 4
Install wall system epoxy with decorative flake
  • STEP 5
    Apply urethane topcoats
  • STEP 6
New bath install of floor, wall, & shower systems
Project Details
  • Project Name - UMass Memorial: Campus Lavatories
  • Type of Business - Healthcare
  • Location - Worcester, Massachusetts
  • GC/Architects - SLAM Collaborative & Consigli
  • Size - 28 Bathrooms
  • Timeframe - Phased over 2-3 years
  • Products - DuraFlex Epoxy & Urethane
Challenges
Despite the project spanning close to three years, tight timelines dictated each phase to accommodate scheduled shutdown periods. In addition, existing bathrooms required extensive waterproofing due to their proximity to labs, patient rooms, and offices. Subsequent leaking would result in slowed productivity and the possibility of additional corridors and campus buildings requiring repair.

Black Bear's Solution

Black Bear developed a comprehensive scope of work that scheduled phases to align with the hospital’s shutdown periods. Crews prepped existing bathrooms and waterproofed areas before applying the new coatings. A decorative flake was designed to complement the spaces. When renovation was complete, Black Bear scheduled installation of epoxy floors, walls, and shower systems in the new build lavatories.
